Springtime always feels like such a season of renewal to me. When the trees and grass start getting green and kids start counting down the days of school left on the calendar, it feels like God must have decided we were worth another year after all. It always energizes me and makes me feel ready for the busy summer season ahead.
This spring is different than the last though. We are facing challenging times in our country, our state, and right here at home. Gas prices are soaring, which raises the price of everything else. Disposable income is drastically reduced for most people. You can see the change right here in town. Restaurants have less of a wait, retail stores aren't as busy, and fewer businesses are hiring.
If these times are difficult for the average family, just imagine what it feels like for families on the edge or deeply entrenched in poverty. Feeding their children was already a struggle. It may feel impossible now. When stress levels go up, incidents of child abuse go up as well. Now, I don't mean that every family in poverty abuses their children. That is absolutely wrong. In fact, most do not and are very good parents. But for those where violence is already a problem, increased financial pressure may aggravate the situation. Please be aware of those around you who are struggling and look for ways to help.
If you think that CASA may be the way you want to get involved, we'll have another training for new advocates in the late summer, and we'd sure love to talk with you about that. We also need committed folks on our fundraising team and our Board of Directors. There are lots of way to help, and they are all critical to our success. Thanks for all you are already doing!
